Nishine Weir - Nishine Weir

This canal irrigates the northwestern Fukushima Basin on the left bank of the Abukuma River in northeastern Fukushima Prefecture. In 1618 (Genwa 4), Sato Shin'emon, one of the four district officials of Shin'tatsu, Yonezawa Domain, excavated the 14-kilometer Yuno Weir (Nihineshita Weir) to take water from the Surikami River at Hakke, Yuno Village, Nishine District (Fukushima City), which opened up 400 hectares of rice paddies. In 1624 (Kan'ei 1), Fukushima District Governor Furukawa Zenbei, with Shin'emon's cooperation, began work to take water from the Surikami River at Anahara, Yuno Village, which was completed in 1632 (Nihinegami Weir). The difficult work involved excavating rock walls to reach the hot springs in Yuno. It stretched for 30 kilometers and irrigated 900 hectares of rice paddies. In 1969, the Fujikura Dam was built in Ubugasawa to make up for the water shortage at the Nishine Weir.

福島県北東部、阿武隈(あぶくま)川左岸の福島盆地北西部を灌漑(かんがい)する用水路。1618年（元和4）米沢藩(よねざわはん)信達(しんたつ)四郡役の1人佐藤新右衛門(しんえもん)は摺上(すりかみ)川の水を西根郷湯野村八卦(はっけ)（福島市）で取水する湯野堰（西根下堰）14キロメートルを開削し、これにより400ヘクタールの水田が開かれた。1624年（寛永1）には福島郡代古川善兵衛(ふるかわぜんべい)が新右衛門の協力を得て、湯野村穴原(あなはら)で摺上川から取水する工事に着手、1632年に完成した（西根上堰）。湯野の温泉までは岩壁を掘削する難工事であった。延長30キロメートル、900ヘクタールの水田を潤した。1969年西根堰の水不足を補うため、産ヶ沢(うぶがさわ)に藤倉ダムがつくられた。
