A city in the southern Philippines, at the northern tip of Mindanao Island. Capital of Surigao del Norte Province. Population 118,534 (2000). It is the administrative and distribution center of the region, with many mining material dealers. Nearby Nonoc is home to the Philippines' largest nickel mine, as well as cobalt, gold, chromium, and other minerals. It also has laterite deposits. It is the starting point of the Mindanao section of the Maharlika Highway that runs through the Philippines. The residents speak Cebuano.
