Rahei

Japanese:
Rahei

A Chinese painter from the mid-Qing dynasty. His pen name was Dongfu and his pen name was Liangfeng. He was from Yangzhou (Jiangsu province). He was the youngest of the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou". He learned in a dream that he had been the head priest of the "Flower Temple" in his previous life, and called himself the "Flower Temple Monk". He was a disciple of Jin Dongxin, and published a posthumous collection of Jin Dongxin's works after his death. Luo Ping said that he saw demons in broad daylight, and painted a series of "Demon-themed Paintings". These were loved by the literati of the Qianlong period, and he also often painted Taoist and Buddhist paintings, people, landscapes, and flowers. His paintings use a wide range of techniques, from white drawings with uniform lines to ink paintings with a focus on bleeding. His representative work, Jiang Baishi's Poetic Album (Freer Gallery of Art, Washington), was created when he was 42 years old. Among them, "Han River Wildfire" depicts a wildfire burning in a barren winter field, but the contrast with the pitch-black rabbit that jumps out into the wilderness is extremely vivid, and together with the brushwork, it gives a premonition of the modern era.
