Wilhelm Raabe

Wilhelm Raabe

German novelist. Born in a rural area of the Duchy of Braunschweig. After working in a bookstore for a time, he became an auditor at the University of Berlin. He started writing novels on the side, and published Chronicles of Sparrow Alley in 1856. This debut work, which depicts the life of a working-class Berliner in a humorous style, already displays Rabe's unique and skillful narrative technique. From 1862 to 1870, he lived in Stuttgart for eight years and wrote the so-called "Stuttgart Trilogy": The Starving Pastor (1864), Ab Terfan (1867), and The Corpse Carrier (1870). The Starving Pastor, which depicts a young man who is spiritually hungry and pursues his ideals, and who studies hard to become a pastor, was previously considered Rabe's masterpiece, but after the Second World War, the previously overlooked works he wrote after returning to Braunschweig came into the limelight, and it was here that Rabe's true value was discovered. In particular, in his works "Manju" (1891) and "The Vogelsang Archive" (1896), he sharply criticized the times by using as protagonists outsider-type characters who do not adapt to the changing times and instead try to live true to themselves.
