Undergarments for traditional Japanese clothing. There are hadajuban (undergarments) worn directly against the skin, halfjuban (half-length juban) that is somewhere between undergarments and long juban, tsuitake (long sleeved juban), and long juban (wide-sleeved juban worn between hadajuban and long gi). The kanji characters ju and han mean undergarments and half-length garments, respectively, and the word is said to be derived from the Portuguese gibão. Before the inner garments gradually appeared on the surface and became decorative, becoming kosode, they were called undergarments (shitagoromo), skin garments (hadaginu), and skin kosode (hadakosode). These were not called undergarments because they were worn over tops, undergarments, and undergarments, and it is believed that they were only called juban after the Muromachi period, when kosode became established.
