Argentina's leading newspaper. Founded in 1869 by José Clemente Paz in Buenos Aires. It was forced to cease publication for four years from 1951 under the Peron administration, but was relaunched after Peron was ousted in a military coup in 1955, and remains a conservative, independent newspaper to this day. It is one of the two major newspapers in Argentina, along with La Nación. Its circulation was about 100,000 (1996). Other newspapers in Argentina include the centrist tabloid Clarín, which has an excellent Sunday edition, and the English-language newspaper Buenos Aires Herald, which has a contract with the British newspaper The Guardian to include The Guardian Weekly as an appendix to its Sunday edition.
