Etajima [town] - Etajima
An old town occupying Etajima (northeastern Nomi Island) in Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous, with settlements scattered along the coast. Honura, in the center, was once the site of the Naval Academy, and is currently home to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's First Technical School. In addition to cultivating mandarin oranges and navel oranges, the town also farms oysters, seaweed, and shrimp. In November 2004, it merged with Nomi Town, Oki Town, and Okaki Town in Saiki District to become a city, Etajima City. 30.10 km2 . Population 11,652 (2003).
