An old town occupying Etajima (northeastern Nomi Island) in Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous, with settlements scattered along the coast. Honura, in the center, was once the site of the Naval Academy, and is currently home to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's First Technical School. In addition to cultivating mandarin oranges and navel oranges, the town also farms oysters, seaweed, and shrimp. In November 2004, it merged with Nomi Town, Oki Town, and Okaki Town in Saiki District to become a city, Etajima City. 30.10 km2 . Population 11,652 (2003). 広島県安芸(あき)郡,江田島(能美島北東部)を占める旧町。山地が大部分で集落は海岸に点在。中心の本浦(ほんうら)はかつての海軍兵学校所在地で,現在海上自衛隊第1術科学校などがある。ミカン・ネーブルなどの栽培を行うほか,カキ・ノリ・クルマエビの養殖漁業も行う。2004年11月佐伯郡能美町,沖美町,大柿町と合併し市制,江田島市となる。30.10km2。1万1652人(2003)。
