A village in Kuma County in southern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 2,046 (1995). Located in the center of the Hitoyoshi Basin, with the Kuma River flowing through the southern part. The central and northern parts are mountainous areas with an elevation of 200 to 500 meters, and most of the village area is covered by forests, with flat land opening up to the Kuma River and its tributary, the Dozan River basin. The center of the village is near the confluence, and when water transportation on the Kuma River was popular, it flourished as a distribution center for agricultural products and copper from the Fukada Copper Mine upstream of the Dozan River, but it declined with the opening of the railway and the construction of roads. The Fukada Copper Mine was also abandoned in 1944. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
