Jean de La Fontaine

Japanese: ラ・フォンテーヌ(英語表記)Jean de La Fontaine
Jean de La Fontaine
1621‐95
French poet. Widely known for his allegorical poems. Born as the eldest son of a forest and river superintendent in Château-Thierry, Champagne, he was educated in his hometown and Paris, and entered the Oratorio seminary in Paris but dropped out after one year. He then studied law in Paris, while also discussing literature with his close friends from his hometown, Maucloix and Furtier, and experimenting with poetry. After marrying, he took over his father's civil service, but was drawn to literature and commuted back and forth between Paris and his hometown. In 1854, he published his first comedy, The Eunuch. Through an acquaintance, he became the personal poet for the greatest patron of literature at the time, the Inspector General of Finances, Fouquet.

Louis Hippolyte La Fontaine

1807‐64
Politician and Prime Minister of the United Provinces of Canada in British North America (in office 1848-51). Born in Lower Canada, he entered politics after being elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada in 1830. He supported L. J. Papineau's political democratization movement, but was a moderate and did not participate in the armed uprising. With the establishment of the United Provinces of Canada in 1841, he formed a cabinet with R. Baldwin, a British Canadian reformer, as a leader of the French Canadian reformers, and served as Attorney General himself.
