Italian playwright, actor, and director. Born in Naples. He began acting as an actor from an early age, and in 1932 he formed the De Filippo Theatre with his siblings, bringing a new wind to Neapolitan comedy with the performance of his own plays. One of his representative works from this period is Christmas at the Cupiellos (1931). As a playwright, he was greatly influenced by his predecessor Pirandello, and published the critical essays A New Comedy between Me and Pirandello (1936) and Conversations with Pirandello (1937), but it was not until after World War II that he was able to assimilate Pirandello-esque themes and truly blossom.

イタリアの劇作家，俳優，演出家。ナポリ生れ。幼時より俳優として舞台に立ち，1932年には姉弟とともに〈デ･フィリッポ劇団〉を結成し，自作戯曲の上演でナポリ喜劇に新風を送り続けた。この頃の代表作に《クピエロ家のクリスマス》(1931)がある。劇作家としては多分に先輩ピランデロの影響を受けており，評論《私とピランデロの新作喜劇》(1936)，《ピランデロとの対話》(1937)を発表しているが，彼の資質がピランデロ風のテーマを消化して開花するのは第2次大戦後である。
