Japanese: ラブカ(羅鱶) - ラブカ（英語表記）frill shark

A marine fish of the frilled shark family in the order Scyllaformes (illustration). Its Japanese name is said to come from the fact that its skin is smooth and feels like woolly cloth. In some regions, it is often given names based on the fearsome appearance of its face, such as caimanryu, mamushi, or tokage. Its English name comes from the fact that part of the frill-like gill flap protrudes from the gill slits. There is only one species in one family in the world, and it has been reported from Japan, Australia, the southwest Indian Ocean, South Africa, the North Atlantic Ocean, southern California, and the Atlantic coast of South America.

カグラザメ目ラブカ科の海産魚（イラスト）。和名は皮膚が滑らかで肌触りが毛織物のラシャに似るのに由来するといわれる。地方によってはカイマンリュウ，マムシ，トカゲなどとその顔つきの恐ろしさに基づく名が多い。英名は鰓孔（さいこう）からフリル状の鰓弁（さいべん）が一部分突出することに由来する。世界に1科1種のみで，日本，オーストラリア，南西インド洋，南アフリカ，北大西洋，南カリフォルニア，南アメリカの大西洋岸から報告されている。
