Tokugawa Yorinobu

Japanese: 徳川頼宣 - とくがわよりのぶ
Tokugawa Yorinobu

A feudal lord in the early Edo period. Ieyasu's 10th son. His mother was Oman no Kata (Yojuin), the daughter of Masaki Kunitoki, a local lord in Kazusa (Chiba Prefecture). He was the founder of the Kii clan, one of the Gosanke (three main branches of the Tokugawa clan). He was born in Fushimi on March 7, 1603 (Keicho 8). His childhood name was Chofukumaru. In 1603 (Keicho 8), he was given 200,000 koku of land in Mito. The following year, his land was increased by 50,000 koku. In 1606, he came of age and took the name Yorimasa. In 1610, his land was increased to 500,000 koku in Suruga, Totomi (Shizuoka Prefecture), and eastern Mikawa (Aichi Prefecture). He participated in the Winter and Summer Sieges of Osaka, and after Ieyasu's death in 1616 (Genwa 2), he was given Sunpu Castle (Shizuoka City), and married Kato Kiyomasa's daughter the following year. In 1619, he became the lord of Wakayama Castle with a fief of over 550,000 koku. Around this time, he changed his name to Yorinobu, and then to Yorinobu. In 1626 (Kan'ei 3), he was appointed Gon Dainagon (Gon Dainagon) of Junior Second Rank. He died in Wakayama on January 10, 11th year of Kanbun. His posthumous name was Nanryuin-dono. It is well known that there were rumors that he was the backer of Yui Shosetsu in the Keian Incident. His grave is at Choho-ji Temple (Shimotsu-cho, Kainan City, Wakayama Prefecture).
