It was formerly called Ghazna. It is located in the eastern part of Afghanistan, on a plateau at an altitude of 2,225 m, overlooking the Ghazni River. It is the capital of the province of the same name. It is 150 km south-southwest of the capital Kabul and 360 km north-northeast of Kandahar, and is connected to both cities by a highway. It is the country's main commercial and industrial city, distributing agricultural products from the surrounding irrigated farmland, and many of the famous sheepskins for coats are produced here. It is an ancient city with a long history, and was the capital of the Ghazni dynasty in the early 11th century. The old city on the left bank is surrounded by a wall, and is the only fortified city still standing in Afghanistan, with a 46-m-high fort (13th century). It became Afghan territory in 1747, and was occupied by British troops during the First Afghan War. It was occupied by the former Soviet army during the Afghan conflict, but was recaptured by anti-government guerrillas in 1981. Population: 35,900 (1988 estimate).
