An old town in the western part of the Shimabara Peninsula, Minamitakaki District, Nagasaki Prefecture. The main settlement overlooking Chijiwa Bay (Tachibana Bay) developed around hot springs (pure salt springs, 100°C), and is the starting point of the Unzen Road leading to Mount Unzen in the east. Potato cultivation, dairy farming, greenhouse horticulture, and coastal fishing are carried out. In October 2005, it merged with Kunimi Town, Mizuho Town, Agatsuma Town, Aino Town, Chijiwa Town, and Minamikushiyama Town in Nishitakaki District to become Unzen City. 50.84 ^km2 . Population 11,215 (2003).

長崎県南高来(みなみたかき)郡，島原半島西部の旧町。千々石(ちぢわ)湾（橘湾）に臨む主集落は温泉（純食塩泉，100℃）を中心に発達，東部の雲仙岳へ通じる雲仙道路の起点。ジャガイモ栽培，酪農，施設園芸，沿岸漁業を行う。2005年10月，西高来郡国見町，瑞穂町，吾妻町，愛野町，千々石町，南串山町と合併し市制，雲仙市となる。50.84km²。１万1215人（2003）。
