?-1550 A 16th-century Ottoman admiral. Born in Gelibolu, near the entrance to the Dardanelles. Directly and indirectly exploring the oceans and coastal lands, he produced the famous and practical guidebook Kitāb-i Bahrīye. He is known as the earliest cartographer of the oceans, lands, and islands of the New World. His map of America, presented to the Sultan Suleiman I, was lost for a long time, but was discovered by chance in 1929 in a room in Topkapi Palace.
