Meuse (English spelling)

Japanese: ムーズ[川](英語表記)Meuse
Meuse (English spelling)
A river that flows north from northeastern France, passes through Belgium and the Netherlands, and empties into the North Sea. Its total length is about 950 km, and its drainage area is 36,000 km2. In the Netherlands, it is called the Maas. It originates at an altitude of about 400 m on the Langres plateau, on the eastern edge of the Paris Basin, and runs from south to north through the Meuse department in western Lorraine. The Meuse department is the least densely populated, most rural, and least developed in the region. Verdun, in the meandering valley of the Meuse, was a fierce battlefield in World War I. It crosses the Ardennes plateau near the border with Belgium, and when it reaches the northern foot of the plateau, it changes direction to the east-northeast and flows through coalfields and industrial areas from Namur to Liège.
