Lapithai (English spelling)

In Greek legend, a tribe that lived in the mountainous region of Thessaly. When their king, Ixion's son Peirithoos, married Hippodameia, he invited his half-brother, the Centaurs of Mount Pelion, to the feast. The drunken Centaurs tried to plunder the bride and the Lapithai women, and a great brawl broke out. The Lapithai, aided by Theseus, the Athenian prince and friend of Peirithoos, who had also been invited to the feast, defeated the Centaurs after a fierce battle.

ギリシア伝説で，テッサリアの山岳地方に住んでいた部族。単数形はラピテスLapithēs。彼らの王イクシオンIxiōnの子ペイリトオスPeirithoosがヒッポダメイアHippodameiaと結婚したおり，彼はその祝宴にみずからの異母兄弟にあたるペリオン山の半人半馬のケンタウロス族を招いた。ところが酩酊したケンタウロスどもが花嫁やラピタイ族の女を略奪しようとしたので，ここに大乱闘が生じたが，ラピタイ族は，やはりこの宴席に招かれていたペイリトオスの親友，アテナイ王子テセウスの加勢もあって，激戦の末，ケンタウロス族を撃退したという。
