This refers to the kingdom that had its capital in Vientiane after the Laotian Kingdom of Lan Xang split in 1707. The Kingdom of Lan Xang was founded in the mid-14th century with Luang Prabang in the north as its capital, but in the mid-16th century under King Sethathirat, the capital was moved to Vientiane in the south to avoid the danger of Burmese invasions. In Vientiane, the Pagoda That Luang, a proud example of Laotian architectural beauty, and the Royal Palace were built, and the Emerald Buddha, brought from Chiang Mai in Thailand, was enshrined at Wat Phra Kaew.
