...A city in the southern part of Tochigi Prefecture. Established as a city in 1937. Population 85,137 (1995). Occupying an area extending from the southeastern part of the Ashio Mountains to the tip of the Fukiage alluvial fan, the Uzuma River and the Nagano River flow south. The Tochigi Prefectural Office was located here from 1871 (Meiji 4) to 1884. A key transportation location, the JR Ryomo Line and the Tobu Nikko Line pass through the city, and the Tobu Utsunomiya Line branches off from Shin-Tochigi Station. In 1972, the Tochigi Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway was opened.
