Kizawa Kofun Group

...A city in the southern part of Tochigi Prefecture. Established as a city in 1937. Population 85,137 (1995). Occupying an area extending from the southeastern part of the Ashio Mountains to the tip of the Fukiage alluvial fan, the Uzuma River and the Nagano River flow south. The Tochigi Prefectural Office was located here from 1871 (Meiji 4) to 1884. A key transportation location, the JR Ryomo Line and the Tobu Nikko Line pass through the city, and the Tobu Utsunomiya Line branches off from Shin-Tochigi Station. In 1972, the Tochigi Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway was opened. The production of traditional wooden clogs, pocket ash, and clay roof tiles has declined, but footwear production has shifted to sandals and is growing. ...

…栃木県南部の市。1937年市制。人口8万5137(1995)。足尾山地南東部から吹上扇状地の扇端部に至る地域を占め，巴波（うずま）川，永野川が南流する。1871年(明治4)から84年まで栃木県庁が置かれた。交通の要地で，JR両毛線と東武日光線が通じ，新栃木駅から東武宇都宮線が分岐する。1972年には東北自動車道の栃木インターチェンジが設けられた。在来の下駄，懐炉灰，粘土瓦の生産は減少したが，履物の生産はサンダル類へ転換して発展している。…
