Lapis lazuli, also called lazurite, is a mineral that has been prized since ancient times as one of the ultramarine cloisonnés. It is a member of the sodalite family, and although some are found with clearly dodecahedral crystals, it usually forms dense lumps. It is found with pyrite and diopside in limestone that has been subjected to contact metamorphism. Lapis lazuli has long been famous, and it is also found in the former Soviet Union, Chile, Italy, the United States, and other places. It has not yet been reported to be produced in Japan. Lapis lazuli mixed with pyrite is popular as jewelry, and when polished, it has a beautiful deep blue background with gold flecks. For this reason, it is also called lazurite. Ultramarine, which has long been used in rock paints, is made from powdered lapis lazuli, but in recent years it has been replaced with synthetic products. It dissolves in hydrochloric acid and becomes gelatinous, emitting the unpleasant odor of hydrogen sulfide. The scientific name lapis lazuli comes from the Latin word for stone, and lazuli from the Persian word for blue.
