… During the Roman Empire, a postal service called the cursus publique was established, and later, post offices were equipped with horses, fast carriages called rhedas, and carts called clabulares, sometimes with as many as 20 horses. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the efforts of Clovis and Charlemagne to restore the postal service were unsuccessful, and while the Eastern Roman Empire and Islam had revived the postal service since the 7th century, it was not until the 13th century that the University of Paris established a postal service called the messagerie for students in Europe that it was finally restored.
