In the Edo period, shop tenants, estimated to be about 70% of the residents of Edo and Osaka, provided the necessary guarantees when renting a house. Shop tenants were often relatives or people from the same hometown, and in some cases they were not only homeowners but also shop tenants. Shop tenants not only rented houses, but also took in the families of shop tenants when they were unable to pay the rent or fell into extreme poverty. It can be said that the lives of the lower classes in big cities were based on the work of the family, and on top of that, their livelihood was guaranteed by shop tenants and housekeepers (landlords).
