The highest educational institution in China for training civil servants. It was established in the capital during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty. Students recommended or selected from the provinces were taught, and those who passed the examinations became civil servants. During the Tang Dynasty, it educated the children of aristocrats alongside the Imperial Academy, but with the establishment of the imperial examination system in the Song Dynasty, it fell into decline.
