Lérida - Lérida (English spelling)

The capital of Lleida province in the Catalonia region in northeastern Spain. Population 112,199 (2001). In Catalan, it is called Lléida. It is located on the right bank of the Segre River at an altitude of 222 meters. It has been the seat of an archipelago since 1149. It is an old town of Roman origin, located at a strategic location for transportation and military purposes leading to France, and has long had the character of a fortress city. In 1831, the population was only 12,500, but since the 19th century, modern irrigation facilities have been established in the surrounding areas, and intensive production of vegetables and fruits has been carried out, and it has developed as a center of this. Currently, fertile farmland has been opened up on the four-tiered river terrace 60 meters above the Segre River, and chicken and pig farming is also carried out. It is a distribution center for these agricultural products, and a commercial and administrative center. The old town has winding streets and historical sites such as a large cathedral and church.
