A shrimp of the family Pectiniidae in the class Crustacea, with one of the first thoracic legs abnormally large and its pincers making a sharp popping sound (illustration). It lives in holes it digs in the sandy, muddy bottom from the intertidal zone to a depth of about 20 m, and is often caught in cast-off nets and hand-drawn nets. Body length 5 cm. The cephalothorax is smooth and completely spineless. The rostrum is spiny and very short. The eyes have no stalks and are completely covered by the cephalothorax. The first and second thoracic legs have pincers. The first thoracic leg is asymmetrical, but the second thoracic leg is small and of the same length. 第1胸脚のいずれか片方が異常に大きく,そのはさみでパチンという鋭い破裂音を出す甲殻綱テッポウエビ科のエビ(イラスト)。潮間帯から水深20mくらいまでの砂泥底に穴を掘ってすみ,打瀬網や手繰網に入ることが多い。体長5cm。頭胸甲は滑らかで,まったくとげをもたない。額角はとげ状でたいへん短い。眼は柄をもたず,頭胸甲に完全に覆われている。第1,2胸脚にはさみをもつ。第1胸脚は左右不相称であるが,第2胸脚は小さく,左右同長。
