A large, hairy rhinoceros that was widespread from Europe to northern Asia at the end of the Great Ice Age 20,000 to 100,000 years ago. Well-preserved frozen fossils have been discovered in the Siberian tundra, but two specimens were discovered in 1907 and 1929 in Starnia, Galicia, an oil field in Poland, where salt water and petroleum bitumen have soaked into the body, preserving the soft parts well. These rhinoceros are on display at the Krakow Museum. Some specimens have skulls over 85 cm long and body lengths of around 3 m, making them large for rhinoceroses.
