...This term has been widely used in Japan since the Japan Endoscopy Society was founded in 1961. Examination using an endoscope is called endoscopy, but in Japan, this is also often referred to as endoscopy.

The origins of endoscopy date back to the Greek and Roman era, when it was used to dilate the anus and diagnose and treat hemorrhoids.
