It is an evergreen shrub of the Euphorbiaceae family, 1-2m tall. Native to Java, Malaysia, Australia, etc. It is widely cultivated as a hedge in tropical regions, but in Japan it is usually grown in a pot in a greenhouse and used as a summer interior decoration. The leaves are alternate, glossy, thick and leathery, and come in various shapes from ovate to linear. There are also twisted ones and ones with only incised veins almost to the midvein and leaflets at the end. Depending on the cultivar, the leaves can have beautiful colors such as white, yellow, brown, and red, and many have spots and stripes, which is why it is also known as Henyouboku (weird-leaf tree).
