Located on the Lanao Plateau in the central-western part of Mindanao in the Philippines, this is the second largest lake in the country. It has an area of 347 km2, a lake surface elevation of 700 m, and a maximum depth of 273 m. It is said to be a lake dammed by lava, and the surrounding area has cool temperatures and excellent scenery. At the northern end of the lake is the Filipino Muslim town of Marawi, from which the Agus River flows north and empties into Iligan Bay. As it descends a basalt plateau with an elevation difference of 700 m in just 29 km, there are a succession of rapids and waterfalls, making it a treasure trove for power development.
