Lerner, Abba Ptachya
Born: October 28, 1903, Bessarabia
[Died] October 27, 1982. Florida Russian-born American economist. Studied at the University of London, and before World War II, he was a member of the London School along with LC Robbins and JR Hicks, and was active in the fields of new welfare economics and monopoly theory. After the publication of JM Keynes's "The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money," he was active as a Keynesian in the field of fiscal theory. After working at various universities in the United States after the war, he was a professor at the University of California from 1966 to 1971, and later served as a professor emeritus at the same university. He is known for his formulation of the degree of monopoly presented in his 1934 paper "The Concept of Monopoly and the Measurement of Monopoly Power," and for the Marshall-Lerner condition developed in "The Economics of Control" (1944). His other works include "Essays in Economic Analysis" (1953) and "Economic of Employment" (1955).

Died March 31, 1984, Innsbruck. A leading theologian in modern German Catholic theology. In 1922 he joined the Society of Jesus, and in 1948 he became professor of catechetical theology at the University of Innsbruck. In 1963 he transferred to the University of Munich to teach religious philosophy, and from 1967 he taught catechetical theology at the University of Münster. While based on the tradition of scholastic philosophy, he successfully developed a theology that addressed modern issues with original, strong logic and a new awareness of problems, based on a deep understanding of modern philosophy. A tireless writer and thinker, he has written over 1,000 books and papers across a wide range of fields. His major papers include Schriften zur Theologie (13 volumes, 1957-78), a collection of theological essays, as well as Grundkurs des Glaubens (76).

現代ドイツ・カトリック神学を代表する神学者。 1922年イエズス会に入り,48年インスブルック大学教理神学教授。 63年ミュンヘン大学に転じて宗教哲学を講じ,67年からはミュンスター大学で教理神学を教えた。スコラ哲学の伝統に立脚しながら,現代の哲学の深い理解のうえに立って独創的かつ強靭な論理と新しい問題意識により現代に問いかける神学の展開に成功。倦むことを知らない著作家,思想家で,広範な領域にわたる著作,論文の数は 1000をこえる。主要論文を集めた『神学論文集』 Schriften zur Theologie (13巻,1957~78) のほか『信仰基礎論』 Grundkurs des Glaubens (76) がある。
