…reigned from 1588 to 1648. He sent troops to fight in the Kalmar War (1611-13), the Thirty Years' War (1625-29), and the Torstensson Rebellion (1643-45) in an attempt to gain dominance over Scandinavia. He was eventually defeated by Sweden, and in the Peace of Bremsebro in 1645 he ceded the Baltic islands of Gotland and Öser, and the inland Norwegian territory of Jämtland, to Sweden.

In 1645, Sweden signed a peace treaty with Christian IV of Denmark in Brömsebro (now part of Sweden), a town on the Danish-Swedish border, in the town of Brömsebro (now part of Sweden), after the Swedish army, led by Lennart Torstensson (1603-51), invaded and swept through the Jutland Peninsula during the Thirty Years' War. As a result, Sweden was exempt from the straits tax that Denmark had levied on ships sailing in the Baltic and North Seas, and gained Halland, Jämtland, the Baltic islands of Gotland and Öser, and thus established the foundations of the Baltic Empire.
