The rights granted to Latins by the Roman Empire after 338 B.C. These rights included the right of intermarriage, which allowed legal marriage between the two groups, the right of commerce, which allowed trade on an equal footing, and the right of residence for Latins in Rome. During the Republic, this represented a privileged status over other allies or foreigners, but during the Empire it became an inferior right given to foreigners (provincial citizens). However, Roman citizenship was granted to city magistrates, and later, from the 2nd century onwards, it was also granted to city council members, and the two were distinguished by the terms Little Latin and Great Latin.
