Synthetic variety

Japanese: 合成品種 - ごうせいひんしゅ（英語表記）synthetic variety

When several varieties with a wide range of genetic qualities are mixed and cultivated, natural pollination occurs between the varieties. The generation in which this interbreeding begins is called synthetic-0, and after this, interbreeding within the population is maintained with the addition of several selection methods. This population is called a synthetic variety. Like F1 hybrids, this is a breeding method that actively utilizes hybrid vigor, mainly for outcrossing crops (such as pasture grasses and sugar beets). F1 hybrids, which rely on a single pair of crosses, quickly lose hybrid vigor as the generations progress.

遺伝の素質に幅のあるいくつかの品種を混ぜて栽培すると，その品種群の間で自然受粉が起こる。この相互交配の始まる世代を合成‐0といい，この後，いくつかの選抜を加えながら，集団の中の相互交配を維持していく。この集団を合成品種という。これは一代雑種と同じように，おもに他殖性作物(牧草類やテンサイなど)について雑種強勢を積極的にいかした育種法である。1組の交配に頼る一代雑種は，世代が進むと雑種強勢がすぐに衰えてしまう。
