Front belt - Maeobi

Japanese:
Front belt - Maeobi
A way of tying an obi with the knot in front. Originally, obi were thin and generally tied in front, but later, as obi became wider, they began to be tied in the back. In the Edo period, girls began to wear obi in the back, and obi in front became a symbol of married women, but as obi in front was inconvenient for housework, married women later began to wear obi in front. However, even today, the custom of tying obi in front remains in some regions during ceremonies, and in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, the wife of the chief mourner wears an obi in front, and in parts of Saga Prefecture, there is a custom called goke obi, where a wife wears an obi in front for three days after her husband dies. In some regions, the custom remains that brides wear obi in front at weddings, and mothers-in-law wear obi in front when they welcome their daughters into the family.
