In the 1960s in the United States, various social movements such as the anti-Vietnam War movement, the black liberation movement, and feminism erupted. Under these circumstances, professional economists and graduate students in the university system were forced to reorient their research methodologies and choice of research topics. Until then, the subject of American economic theory and empirical research had been the so-called neoclassical synthesis, which also included Keynes's theory. However, this has a tendency to view the economy as a collection of individuals and companies that are considered equal a priori, and therefore lacks the internal impetus to go into the hierarchical structure of the real economy and society, as seen in racial discrimination, and to propose a program of change if there are any points that need to be changed.
