Standchen (English spelling)

...Small pieces for violin and piano were also written in imitation of such songs. In 19th-century Germany, this type of serenade was called Ständchen, and many songs and choral pieces, including those by Schubert, were written for it. The second type was a large-scale vocal piece similar to an opera or cantata, which was composed in the 17th and 18th centuries for the purpose of paying tribute to high-ranking people or for public celebrations.
