Sir Terence Mervyn Rattigan

British playwright. He studied at Oxford University and aspired to become a diplomat, but his studies were interrupted by his interest in playwriting. His comedy A Primer on French (1936) was a success, and his melodrama The Winslow Boy (1946) established his reputation. Since then, he has produced both emotional comedies such as Who is Sylvia? (1950) and The Sleeping Prince (1953), and melodramas such as The Browning Version (1948), The Deep Blue Sea (1952), and Every Table (1954). His skillful dramaturgy in providing roles that bring out the best in his stars has earned him the trust of a commercial writer who knows the tastes of the average audience. He has also written many film screenplays, including adaptations of his own works. In 1971, he was awarded the title of Sir.
