A processing method in which a surface that has been pre-machined to a certain degree of precision is rubbed against the surface of a tool called a lap, such as a cast iron lap, with a lapping agent between them, to create a finished surface with excellent dimensional accuracy and surface roughness. The lapping agent is a mixture of fine abrasive grains, chromium oxide, iron oxide, and other fine powders, mixed with light oil, etc. The machine tool used for lapping is called a lapping machine.

ある程度精密に前加工した面を，鋳鉄製などのラップという工具の表面にラップ剤を介在させてすり合わせ，寸法精度や表面あらさの優秀な仕上面をつくる加工法。ラップ剤には微細砥粒(とりゅう)，酸化クロム，酸化鉄などの微粉に軽油などを混合したものを使用。ラッピングを行うための工作機械はラップ盤と呼ばれる。
