Japanese: ラッパムシ(喇叭虫) - ラッパムシ

A general term for protozoa belonging to the Stentor genus of the Stentor family of the Ciliate class. They live in organic ponds, swamps, and ditches, attached to the bottom soil, but sometimes swim away. They are trumpet-shaped with a body length of 1 to 2 mm and vary in color from colorless to brown, pale pink, blue, or green depending on the species. There is a wide peristoma at the front end, the edge of which is surrounded by a spiral-shaped oral girdle made of a small membrane row of cilia, the end of which sinks into the mouth, and the pharynx continues downward from the mouth. The entire surface, except for the peristoma, is densely covered with short cilia.

繊毛虫綱ラッパムシ科ラッパムシ属Stentorに含まれる原生動物の総称。有機質の多い池や沼，溝などにすみ，底土に付着しているが，ときには離れて泳ぐこともある。体長1～2mmのらっぱ形で無色，褐色，淡紅色，青色，緑色など種類によって異なる。前端には広い囲口部があり，その周縁を繊毛の小膜列からできた口帯がらせん形にとり巻いていて，その終端は口に沈下し，口から咽頭が下方につづいている。囲口部を除いた全体表には短い繊毛が密生している。
