Name of the head of the Hanayagi school of Japanese dance. [Kisaragi Aoko] First World(1821-1903) Trained as a kabuki actor under Ichikawa Danjūrō VII, but gave up the practice at the age of 19. He returned to the school of Nishikawa Senzō IV, whom he had studied as a child, and took the name Nishikawa Yoshijirō. He studied kabuki choreography alongside his teacher, but was expelled from the school in a dispute after his teacher's death. He then changed his name to Hanayagi Yoshijirō and founded the Hanayagi school in 1849 (Kaei 2). The following year, in 1850, he changed his name to Jusuke, and from 1851 he worked as choreographer for the Nakamura, Ichimura, and Kawarasaki theatres, and in 1860 (Man'en 1) he changed his name to Jusuke. He was active in the theater world as a renowned choreographer. He has many works, including "Kioi-jishi," "Tsuchigumo," "Funabenkei," and "Ibaraki." After the mid-Meiji period, he handed over his position to the second Fujima Kan'emon. [Kisaragi Aoko] II(1893-1970) was the biological son of the first Onoe Kikugoro. His real name was Hanayagi Yoshisaburo. After his father's death, he entered the world of Kabuki and eventually became a trainee of the 6th Onoe Kikugoro, taking the name Onoe Kikutaro. Six years later, he left the world of Kabuki to become a dancer, and in 1918 (Taisho 7), he succeeded the 2nd Onoe Kikugoro. He became a pioneer of the new dance movement and founded the Hanayagi Dance Research Society. He also participated in a number of classical dance research groups, and for a time continued to choreograph for the Kabuki world, engaging in a wide range of activities. He choreographed many pieces, including "Koma," "Kurozuka," and "Yumedono." In 1960 (Showa 35), he was designated a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure), and in 1963, he was given the name Juo. [Kisaragi Aoko] III(1935-2007) His daughter Wakaba took over in 1963 (Showa 38). The following year, in 1964, she took over as head of the Hanayagi Dance Research Society. She established the management structure of the style, and worked to enrich it by holding seminars and training young dancers. On the third anniversary of her father's death, she established the Hanayagi Juo Award to put her father's aspirations into practice. Her most famous works include "Yumedono" and "Kounotori." [Kisaragi Aoko] IV(1931-2020) Son of the 4th Hanayagi Yoshijiro, his real name was Hanayagi Hiroshi. He studied under his uncle, the 2nd Jusuke. In 1967 (Showa 42), he took the name of the 5th Yoshijiro. He served as the guardian of the 3rd Iemoto for many years. In 2007 (Heisei 19), he took the name Kan'o, and then the name Jusuke of the 4th Iemoto. In 2016, he handed over the Iemoto position to his grandson, and served as the guardian of the Iemoto under the name Ju'o.
