Pilot Farm

Japanese: パイロット･ファーム

This is the name of the intensive dairy experimental farm implemented since 1955 in Tokotan, Betsukai Town, Nemuro Subprefecture, on the Konsen Plateau in eastern Hokkaido, as part of the Konsen Mechanical Reclamation Project. After World War II, construction was carried out with financing from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) as part of the First Five-Year Plan (1952-56) of the First Hokkaido Comprehensive Development Plan in order to increase food production and provide relief for unemployed repatriates and war victims. As a result, the construction time required for reclamation and soil improvement was greatly shortened by the introduction of large civil engineering machinery, and common facilities for production and life such as roads, drainage channels, scattered housing, livestock sheds, and schools were built in advance, aiming for early stabilization of farming.

北海道東部の根釧（こんせん）台地，根室支庁別海（べつかい）町床丹（とこたん）で1955年以降実施された根釧機械開墾事業による集約的酪農実験農場の呼称。第2次大戦後，食糧増産と引揚者，戦災者の失業救済のため，第1期北海道総合開発計画の第1次五ヵ年計画(1952‐56)の一部として，国際復興開発銀行(世界銀行)の融資を受けて建設がすすめられた。このため大型土木機械の導入などにより開墾と土壌改良に必要な工期が大幅に短縮されたほか，あらかじめ道路，排水路，散居形態の住宅，畜舎，学校など生産，生活の共同施設が建設され，営農の早期安定を目ざした点に特色がみられる。
