King of Norway. Reigned 1046-66. Known as Hardråde the Hard King. Half-brother of Olav II. After the defeat and death of his elder brother, he fled to Russia and became the commander of the Varangian army in Constantinople. In 1046 he returned to Norway and became co-king with his nephew Magnus I, and the following year he became sole king when Magnus died. He established control over the country's powerful clans, brought the eastern mountain region under royal authority for the first time, and founded the city of Oslo (around 1050).
