...developmentally, the iris, which exists as a thin, disc-shaped membrane in the eye, has a round hole in the center that allows light into the eye. In bright conditions, the pupil becomes smaller (called miosis), reducing the amount of light entering the eye. In dark conditions, the pupil becomes larger (called mydriasis), allowing more light to enter the eye.
