A port city in southwest Vietnam, 200 km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Population 141,000 (1992). It faces Lachi Gia Bay in the southeastern Gulf of Siam. It is a lowland area 1.5 m above sea level, and the surrounding area is a newly developed area of the Mekong Delta, with waterways crisscrossing it. The land behind is low-lying, so floating rice is cultivated, but the area around Lachi Gia has good drainage and is cultivated with transplants once a rainy season. A canal runs to Long Xuyen along the main Mekong River, and there is inland waterway access to Ho Chi Minh City. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
