Latia [state] - Latia

Japanese:
Latia [state] - Latia
A region in central Italy. Its capital is Rome. It faces the Tyrrhenian Sea and is surrounded by the provinces of Tuscany, Umbria, Abruzzo, Molise, and Campania. It has many hilly areas extending from the Apennine Mountains, and many medieval cities called Castelli Romani (Castel Gandolfo) remain south of Rome, which have been used as villas by Roman citizens from ancient times to the present. The coastal areas were swamps where malaria occurred, but were reclaimed in the 19th century. The economy of the region is based on agriculture, with wheat, corn, and vegetables. In ancient times, the Etruscans lived there, and several important ruins remain. At the time of the founding of the ancient Roman state, it referred to a limited area called Latium, east and south of the Tiber River, but during the imperial period it expanded to include the region of Campania. In the 8th century, Pepin the Younger donated Ratio, which was Byzantine territory, to the Pope, and the foundation of the Papal States was laid. From the second half of the 13th century, the Pope became a true secular ruler, and from the 15th century onwards the Papal States expanded to central and northern Italy. Although it resisted annexation to the unified state established in 1861, it became a province of the Kingdom of Italy in 1870. Area: 17,207 km2 , population: 5,502,886 (2011).
