Sanrinkai - Forestry Association

Japanese: 山林会 - さんりんかい

A private forestry guidance organization organized throughout Japan, largely inspired by the founding of the Dai-Nippon Sanrinkai (Great Japan Forestry Association) in 1882. The Dai-Nippon Sanrinkai was founded in 1882 on the occasion of the Sanrinkai Forestry Exhibition, and had its forerunner, the Sanringaku Kyokai (Forestry Studies Association), which was established in 1879 to exchange and discuss academic knowledge about forests. Its purpose was "To cultivate and improve forests, one must have a thorough understanding of the merits of climate, soil, arboriculture, and felling transportation. ... Understanding the principles of forestry, spreading them through mutual communication, and improving forests are the key to economic success and the path to wealth."

大日本山林会の設立(1882)を大きな契機として全国各地に組織された民間の林業指導機関。大日本山林会は，1879年に山林に関する学術知識を交換論究するために設立された山林学共会を先駆とし，82年に山林共進会の開催を機に設立されたが，その目的を〈山林を蕃殖，改良するには気候，土地，樹芸，伐木運搬などの良否をよく知らねばならぬ。……林学の理を知り，相互通信によりそれを普及し，山林を改良するのが経国の要であり，富国の道である〉としていた。
