A glass artist and luxury furniture maker who represents the French Art Nouveau style. Born in Nancy, he studied philosophy and mineralogy in Weimar, then trained in glassmaking at the Meisenthal glass factory and took over his father's business. At the 1878 Paris World's Fair, he exhibited "moonlight-colored" glassware made by mixing cobalt oxide, which attracted public attention. He continued to make technical innovations, such as overlaid glass, which helped to invigorate the Art Nouveau era with fantastical expressions. Many of his works feature motifs of plants and insects, and the fluidity and color tones are highly refined. He also established a furniture workshop in 1886, and achieved great success at the Paris World's Fairs in 1989 and 1900. In 1901, he established the Nancy School of crafts, establishing a base for Art Nouveau.
