Ahmedabad
The capital of Gujarat state in western India. Also known as Ahmadabad. An industrial city on the left bank of the Sabarmati River, which flows into the Gulf of Cambay. The center of the cotton industry, commerce, and transportation. It prospered as a trade and cultural center during the Mughal dynasty and the British colonial period. It has a mosque, a Jain temple, and a university (established in 1950). Population: 5,577,940 (2011).
