A province in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula under the rule of the Roman Empire. It was named after the Baetis River (now the Guadalquivir River) that flows through the center of the region. The indigenous Iberian peoples, such as the Turdetani, were enthusiastic about adopting Roman culture under Roman rule, and the region was noted for its rapid urbanization. The country was rich in wheat, grapes, and olive cultivation. The Vandals, noticing this, invaded the region in the 5th century and briefly ruled it, which is why it is called Andalusia (meaning "land of the Vandals").
