German-born (and Argentinean citizen), American Jewish art historian. Born in Berlin, he studied under M. Dvorak and Panofsky. Together with Saxl, he helped A. Warburg and was instrumental in moving his library to London. After working at the Warburg Institute, he became a naturalized American in 1948 and has been a professor at Oxford University since 1955. His main work, Pagan Mysteries of the Renaissance (1958), is a classic that meticulously traces the influence of Neoplatonism on Renaissance art. His other works include Art and Anarchy (1960).

ドイツ出身（アルゼンチン国籍ももっていた），米国のユダヤ系美術史家。ベルリンに生まれ，M.ドボルジャーク，パノフスキーらに師事。A.ワールブルクをザクスルとともに助け，その文庫のロンドン移転に尽力した。ウォーバーグ（ワールブルク）研究所を経て，1948年米国に帰化，1955年以降オックスフォード大学教授。主著《ルネサンスの異教秘儀》（1958年）は，ルネサンス美術への新プラトン主義の影響を克明に跡づけた古典的名著。ほかに《芸術とアナーキー》（1960年）。
