German-born (and Argentinean citizen), American Jewish art historian. Born in Berlin, he studied under M. Dvorak and Panofsky. Together with Saxl, he helped A. Warburg and was instrumental in moving his library to London. After working at the Warburg Institute, he became a naturalized American in 1948 and has been a professor at Oxford University since 1955. His main work, Pagan Mysteries of the Renaissance (1958), is a classic that meticulously traces the influence of Neoplatonism on Renaissance art.
